What if you could assess a person’s Leadership Quotient and predict how they will function in a range of leadership situations? What would you assess? How would you measure it?

At Next Element we’ve been working on this for nearly a decade. And we’ve discovered some answers. In our quest we’ve avoided any hard content measures of leadership (e.g. credentials, experience, degrees, promotions, successful projects). Not that these aren’t important – they most definitely are. We leave this for the industry experts. Our big question is what process factors underly all successful leadership, regardless of industry, position, or technical expertise?

Along with our experience assessing and training hundreds of leaders, we’ve studied Emotional Intelligence, Social Intelligence, Multiple Intelligences, top leadership competencies desired by C-level executives, and leadership skills most associated with success. We’ve distilled it down to these four process skills that make up leadership quotient.

1. Self-Awareness and Self-Control: Intimate knowledge of one’s strengths, weaknesses, triggers, and motivators coupled with ability to master one’s emotions, thoughts, and behaviors. This includes leveraging strengths and compensating for weaknesses.

2. Self-Care: Ability to take elegant care of oneself, physically, emotionally, psychologically and spiritually. Self-ful self-care is the precursor to serving and leading others.

3. Communication Agility: The ability to rapidly recognize and adapt communication for different types of people in order to establish connection, build rapport, and gain engagement.

4. Positive Conflict Skills: The ability to engage in healthy conflict when necessary to advance core priorities (including self-care) while maintaining dignity of all parties. This also means avoiding negative conflict, i.e. Drama.

We believe all four of these can be measured and trained. We see the results every day! What’s your experience defining and measuring leadership quotient?
