Five Questions You Won’t Hear During A Presidential Debate

In an age of divisiveness and sensationalism, it’s unlikely that we’ll hear the presidential candidates talk about the kinds of leadership behavior that builds long-lasting, win-win relationships. Nevertheless, if I was in charge of the debate, here’s the questions I’d ask.

• Describe your track record of seeking connection instead of seeking exception.
• Show how you’ve used positive conflict to create something useful.
• Tell us about the times you’ve put the greater good ahead of your need to be right.
• Describe the limitations of your truth.
• Show evidence of your ability to communicate in ways that people feel heard, understood, and affirmed.

Even if you are only hiring your next CEO instead of the president of the United States, consider assessing true leadership instead of the ability to cause drama.
