No hot wings this month. However, I was able to taste a scorpion at the Typhoon Restaurant in the Santa Monica Airport, during a training in the LA area. I’d give them a 5 out of 5 for uniqueness. Not much taste, lots of crunch, definitely original. And, prior to the scorpions, I ate a plate of crickets – equally unique. – JK

WHERE WE’LL BE

Jamie will be in the Chicago, IL area in July for an open-enrollment seminar. Jeff will be providing an open-enrollment advanced PCM training in Frankenmuth, MI in August. Jeff and Nate will also be training in Malibu, CA in August. We hope you’re having as much fun this summer as we are!

2010 June Issue, “Celebrating Relationships!”

“I’m betting staff surveys at your credit union generally have ‘communications’ as one of the top improvement areas desired. At HCU, we discovered the Process Communication Model (PCM) as a tool to make improvements in the way communication happens at our credit union. Turned out, PCM is much more than just another ‘communication thing.’ It is a way of interacting that yields what we all want…better results, greater efficiencies, more fun, and yes, improved communication. Having personally received PCM training from Next Element, I can highly recommend you spend some time visiting with them to learn how PCM can energize both you and your credit union.” – Garth Strand, President, Hutchinson Credit Union

PCM NUGGET

“I told my Dreamer (son, daughter, spouse, employee) what to do and they didn’t respond. The directive channel doesn’t work.” We often get a version of this question after people begin applying PCM concepts in their lives. Here are some tips for problem-solving this scenario.
1) Are you really dealing with a Dreamer phase person? Evaluate using other PCM tools to refine your hypothesis.
2) Do you deliver the command without guilt or attack, clear of emotion, and without hedging or “softening” it beyond recognition? Otherwise you may be in distress. Remember that it’s usually harder for us to open the Directive Channel than it is for the Dreamer to receive it.
3) Is the command discrete enough? Remember, offer no more that 3 directives in a row – and number 3 will be the instruction to return to you for the next directive! -NGR

2010 May Issue, “Have You Made a Deposit Today?”

“The Process Communication Model provides a powerful context for engaging others on their terms. I am thoroughly impressed by the historical applicability and predictive power I see in this approach.”
- Mike Pomeroy, Six Sigma Master Black Belt, Human Resources

NE CORNER
Investing in relationships happens daily in even the smallest ways. Whether
giving compliments, noticing the good, listening to understand, or
acknowledging the little things, people will remember the experience of the
relationship long after they forget what was said. – JK, JR & NGR

PCM NUGGET
Good process is like money in the bank. People often ask us; “How exactly do
you facilitate trust, enthusiasm, and participation?” The answer is: match
perceptions, close channels, and offer psychological needs. As simple as
this sounds, it is profoundly effective at inviting people to feel heard,
valued, and invested – regardless of the content of the conversation. And,
it takes practice to get better. Every time you match a perception, close a
channel, or offer a psychological need, you are making a deposit in that
relationship. Trust is something that is built one interaction at a time.
-NGR

IN THE NEWS
An article by our dear friend, Sylvia Dresser, was recently published on the
ASAE & Association for Leadership website. This article is about the
success she experienced with a small staff using the Process Communication
Model (PCM) titled, “The Right Communication Tool,” we think you’ll enjoy
Their tower of power wing stack delivered substance and style. Three floors, three
flavors, one delicious experience. The wings were meaty and we enjoyed the unique sauces, although we had to ask for additional sauce to get the full
experience. I give these a four out of five.

PCM NUGGET
There are always great conversations in our Three-day Core Competencies and Advanced PCM training around phasing. One question that comes up is, “can I experience a phase to my next floor without going through the pro-longed distress behavior?” To answer this, I will share from The Process Therapy Model book by Taibi Kahler. Three out of every 100 people who have phased consistently gave a couple of reasons: 1) a spiritual/religious experience occurred; or 2) there was a significant influx of money into the person’s life. Another small percentage of phased individuals who did not experience pro-longed distress reported that their phase was caused by a near-death experience. -JR

BOOK RECOMMENDATION
“Switch, When Change is Hard,” by Chip and Dan Heath. This is a great book!! It has great stories all of which are applicable and relevant. It has a message on how to effect change in all aspects of your life. The theme of the book is that we are part ELEPHANT and part RIDER. The elephant part is the part of us that is emotional and instinctive. The rider part is the part that thinks long term and plans. The book illustrates how you can get the ELEPHANT and RIDER in concert for yourself and your community. It also has great case studies that demonstrate the power one has when their ELEPHANT and RIDER are in concert. Also I am blogging each week on a chapter, working my way through the entire book. Look for my blogs on our website, Linkedin and Twitter. -JK

“This class (PCM Core Competency Training) would be beneficial for any

NE CORNER
Communication training builds a competitive advantage. Engaging your
employees during a recession and making them part of the solution can be a
measurable, competitive advantage, now, and when things turn around. Read

NE-OS RESEARCH UPDATE
Thank you to all the organizations and individuals who have joined us as
research partners in the validation of the NE-OS. We have been
overwhelmed by the support and enthusiasm. Tracking program outcomes is
vital to business success and we are eagerly anticipating the launch of our
final product this summer. Stay tuned for updates. – NGR

PCM NUGGET
Do you want a competitive advantage?
Win a 15% discount off any NE seminar!

From a PCM perspective meeting psychological needs and staying in channel
gives you the ability to communicate, hence a competitive edge. Only about
10% of most interactions qualify as effective communication. In most
processes and systems, we would never tolerate 90% inefficiency! What type
of competitive edge would you have if you stayed in channel and met
psychological needs 20% of the time, or even 30% of the time? Not only
would that give you an edge, it would save time, money and resources. And
the best part, when you go home at the end of the day, you would still have
energy left!

Here is a quiz. Identify which personality type would prefer each of the
following PSYCHOLOGICAL NEED’s. Be the first one to e-mail
Michele@next-element.com with the answers and get 15% off any 2010 NE
seminar (excluding PCM Trainer Certification), or personal coaching.

1. Work in your office by yourself today from 1 to 5 and complete those
reports.
2. It is so nice to see you today.
3. If you get that project done, go home early.
4. Dude, you da man!
5. I really value your commitment to this organization.
6. Your hard work is noticed and appreciated.

PEOPLE WE RECOMMEND
While working in Michigan last month, we were privileged to be led through a
great team-building experience by Tracy Weber, an equine assisted learning
(ELA) facilitator and owner of Kaleidoscope Learning Circle. Challenging
our stereotypes and guiding us into new territory with each other, the
experience with Tracy, her team, and her horses, was a powerful learning and
growth journey for us. We would encourage any team to try it. Tracy and
her team are passionate, committed, insightful, and supremely competent in
their work. Thank you KLC team!
