Helping Employees with Work-Family Balance
Permission to be self-ful is one of the most empowering gifts you can give your employees. We define self-ful as taking care of your whole person, emotionally, physically, and getting your own needs met in a healthy way first, in order to be present at work and at home. This is the beginning step toward balancing work and family. At Next Element we hold each other accountable to be self-ful and encourage this through personal and professional goal setting, checking-in with each other, acknowledging our different learning styles and environmental work preferences. We also assist our clients create healthy, empowering work environments.
Finding good balance looks different from one person to the next. It is not a one size fits all. Employers who create environments that attend to individual emotional as well as physical needs, are inviting their employees to be self-ful and are helping their employees to establish healthy boundaries around work and family. Other examples of how this might look include: checking in with employees on how they are doing daily, asking if they have any special needs or requests; encouraging open communication; making available alternative resources and options in how work gets done; and an environment that leverages differences – one that doesn’t insist on conformity, are all great messages to your employees that say “we value you, and encourage healthy work-family balance in a self-ful way.” And a valued, healthy employee, is a happy, dedicated, effective employee.
